CONCEPTION ARCHITECTURALE ET DIMENSIONNEMENT D’UNE BIBLIOTHEQUE MODERNE DE TYPE R+3 EN OSSATURE BOIS.

Abstract

This final-year thesis presents the design and structural analysis of a modern four-storey timber-frame library intended for the Polytechnic School of Abomey-Calavi. The main objective is to demonstrate the technical feasibility and long-term sustainability of a multi-storey timber building within the climatic, architectural and regulatory context of Benin. The study follows a rigorous methodology beginning with site analysis, architectural programming and the selection of a glued-laminated timber (GL24h) structural system. Following this choice, a comprehensive wind study is carried out in accordance with Eurocode 1, including the determination of the reference wind speed, dynamic pressure, aerodynamic coefficients and the global effects of wind on the building. Based on these actions, the structural design is conducted sequentially. The roof structure is analysed in detail, particularly through the calculation of the timber truss (rafters, tie beam, king post and purlins), verified according to the requirements of Eurocode 5. The main load-bearing elements (composite timber-concrete floors, joists, primary beams, columns and bracing walls ) are designed in accordance with Eurocodes 1, 2 and 5, integrating load combinations as well as ultimate and serviceability limit states. The thesis also includes the design of structural connections, such as metal hangers, timber-to-concrete connectors, anchors and fasteners. These elements are dimensioned according to Eurocode 5 and manufacturers’ technical guidelines, with verification of strength, slip, ductility and fire behaviour. The analyses performed (gravity loads, live loads, wind actions, global stability, dynamic behaviour and connection safety) confirm the robustness, reliability and environmental relevance of a timber-frame structural solution for the construction of a modern and durable library on the Abomey-Calavi campus.
