Abstract
Aphis gossypii is a phloem-feeding insect which remains one of the devastating pests of cotton crop. The present study assessed the effect of two different doses of cashew nut hot and cold extracts on aphids and their predators. The experimental design was a Fisher block design with six treatments each repeated four times. The treatments included: the control (not treated), the Agri-bio-pesticide of 1l/ha dose, 1% concentration of cashew nut hot extracts, 1% concentration of cashew nut cold extracts, 2% concentration of cashew nut hot extracts, 2% concentration of cashew nut cold extracts. The generalized linear
mixed effects models were performed to test the effect of the six treatments on aphids and
their predators. The percentage of seedlings attacked by aphids varied from 10% with
cashew nut cold extracts application at 1% concentration to 20% with the control. The
concentration of 1% of cashew nut extracts was enough to control aphids influence. Cashew nut extraction mode had no influence on the extracts efficiency and the aphids. The study concluded that the biopesticides did not reduce the number of ladybirds, spiders and chrysops compared to the control. But the number of predators (ants) was reduced by the cashew nut hot extracts. Cashew nut extracts could be recommended as an alternative for the integrated management of aphids in organic cotton system.
