This paper highlights the new mission of novelists in the twentieth century in europe, sheds more light on the break with entertainment and storytelling of the nineteenth century and analyses the new subject matters of the twentieth century. English authors may be divided into thee generations according to the literary periods; the period before 1920, the period between the two world wars and the period after the world war II.
