This paper aims to highlight and analyse marriage decline in postcolonial literary works in the English language. The works under consideration are Amma Darko’s Beyond the horizon and The housemaid. Marriage decline is evident nowadays and rampant worldwide. Decline in terms of marriage is a situation caused by the partners or due to circumstances of the wedding. Marriage decline in Amma Darko’s Beyond the horizon and The housemaid is expressed through lack of love, ill-treatment, betrayal, economic exploitation, and family dislocation. The reader-oriented theory has been used to explore the issue of marriage decline in the present study. As a result, marriage does not sustain in a context which the relationships are profit-oriented and the goal of forming a peaceful family is not a shared vision within the couple.
